Evaluations & Therapy

Evaluations

Before starting therapy, I take time to clearly understand how your child learns and where they are experiencing difficulty across the domains of language and literacy. For most families, this begins with a comprehensive language and literacy evaluation. This evaluation allows us to move beyond guesswork, establish a meaningful baseline, and design intervention that is truly targeted to your child. A typical evaluation costs $800 and includes:

  • A 2-3 hour evaluation. I prefer to conduct evaluations in-person via home visit, but I do offer telehealth evaluations via Zoom as needed.

  • A detailed written report with diagnostic impressions and practical recommendations (including school accommodations when appropriate)

  • A one-on-one results conference to review findings and plan next steps together.

If your child has a recent psychological or speech-language evaluation, we may be able to use that information and either forgo a full evaluation or complete a reduced assessment to address any remaining gaps.

Speech-language evaluations may assess a combination of the following domains of communication:

  • Literacy skills (reading & writing, always assessed in tandem with oral language)

  • Oral language (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, memory, and vocabulary)

  • Articulation (production of speech sounds)

  • Fluency (stuttering & cluttering)

  • Oral mechanism (structure and function of the mouth, jaw, tongue, etc.)

  • Voice (loudness, quality, and pitch)

  • Verbal and Nonverbal IQ (screened when indicated)

Intervention

Speech-language therapy at Carmel Language & Literacy targets oral language as the foundation of reading and writing. Treatment focuses on underlying language systems, including sound processing, vocabulary, and grammar, while embedding these goals within a multisensory structured literacy framework. This approach allows intervention to be precise, efficient, and grounded in the science of reading.
